Before you begin to access data on the server, you need to log onto the local workstation. Windows Operating Systems provide a log in procedure, where an authorized user name and secret password must be entered. This user name is passed on to the TIMS3 server to determine your access rights to database records and document files residing on the server.
Your system administrator defines these user names on the Windows Domain server. The list of user names are controlled by a "domain server", where newly defined user names on the server are immediately available on Windows workstations.
On Windows workstations, the procedure for allocating user names on your local workstation can be less rigorous. Windows can accept any newly entered user name, and will prompt for the initial password. However, you will not be able to access data on the server if your user name has not been authorized on the TIMS3 server. It is recommended that you use the domain server for login validation on Windows workstations and that you disable the local caching of the login password to enforce proper security on your network.
